Our objective
Vereniging Aegon (“the Association”), in its capacity as a shareholder, represents in a balanced manner the direct and indirect interests of Aegon Ltd. and its affiliated group companies, as well as those of policyholders, employees, shareholders, and other stakeholders. Influences that could threaten the continuity, independence, or identity of Aegon Ltd., in conflict with the aforementioned interests, are resisted as much as possible. The Association achieves this by holding shares in Aegon Ltd. and exercising the rights attached to them, including voting rights. Its income consists of returns from these securities.
The Association also considers it important to give substance to its social responsibility, in line with its origins as a promoter of mutual solidarity. The statutory objective regarding its social activities stipulates that such activities must align with the identity of Aegon and everything related to it. This applies in particular to Aegon’s purpose, formulated in mid-2023 as: “Helping people live their best lives.”
The Association focuses its social policy on the Netherlands. Financial support is intended for long-term initiatives. One-off commitments are possible; however, support is generally provided for a maximum period of five years, where possible with an option to extend for another five years. This extension option underlines the long-term nature of the Association’s involvement without creating unnecessarily long obligations.
The Association supports three main focus areas, within which one or more projects may be funded. These focus areas are:
- Vitality of the elderly
- Mental health of young people
- Diversity & inclusion, with a focus on financial resilience
When implementing these focus area, the Association assesses whether its contributions can genuinely make a difference for (the future of) the beneficiaries. There must be a clear vision on how impact can be achieved and how this impact can be validated over the course of the project. Financial support from the Association must contribute to positive and sustainable change. Support is provided to existing organizations with a proven concept, preferably supported by scientific evidence or collaboration, or another form of adequate validation. The organization concerned should be recognized position in their field (or able to increase recognition with support by the Association). In addition, the organization must have sound administrative and financial management. Finally, there must be opportunities for active involvement by members of the Association.
At present, the Association’s financial support includes the following organizations:
Vitality of the Elderly
In 2008, the Association established Leyden Academy for Vitality and Ageing B.V. (“LAVA”) in 2008 and has supported it financially since then. The current financial support provided by the Association amounts to €2.0 million per calendar year and runs through 2029. LAVA focuses on exploring opportunities to improve vitality and healthy ageing. It combines scientific research with educational programs and the initiation of developments in the field of vitality and ageing (www.leydenacademy.nl). The Association appoints two members to LAVA’s Supervisory Board, including the chair.
Mental Health of Young People
As of January 2025, the Association supports Stichting @ease (“@ease”), which focuses on strengthening the network of walk-in locations (with no waiting lists) for young people aged 15 to 25 experiencing mental health issues. @ease offers young people a safe space where they feel heard and where they can go if they are struggling with something. Conversations take place with peers (peer-to-peer) and are anonymous. The facilitators are trained using a developed methodology, and @ease is the only organization in the Netherlands with continuous scientific integration. @ease was founded in 2017 by two professors with the support of Innovatiefonds Zorgverzekeraars Nederland.
Diversity & Inclusion with a Focus on Financial Resilience
The Association has explored how best to shape this third focus area. The emphasis is on the financial resilience of women, meaning equality in areas such as wills, prenuptial agreements, and financial contracts with third parties. Since mid-2025, the Association has supported a project by Women Inc. for a period of five years. Women Inc. works on agenda-setting and policy influence through project-based initiatives in the field of equal rights for women. All activities are organized into projects. The Association provides financial support to the project Baas in Eigen Portemonnee, a strategic program aimed at strengthening women’s financial autonomy.
In addition, since January 2026, the Association has supported Bureau Clara Wichmann for a period of two years. Bureau Clara Wichmann is a non-profit organization, founded 42 years ago by the first female lawyer in the Netherlands, and is committed to advancing women’s rights in the country. Its primary focus is on strategic litigation to achieve structural improvements in legislation and case law. Bureau Clara Wichmann operates on the basis of donations and legacies and receives substantial in-kind support from several major law firms. The purpose of the Association’s contribution is to strengthen and accelerate the work of Bureau Clara Wichmann.
